Coil Priming
Priming your vape coils properly is one of the easiest ways to improve flavour, avoid burnt hits, and make your coils last longer. This UK-focused guide from Bargain Vape Shop explains how to prime coils the right way and keep your kit performing at its best.
What is a vape coil?
A vape coil is the powerhouse of your e-cigarette, sitting inside a metal housing with cotton wicking material wrapped around a heating element. When you press fire, the battery heats the coil, vaporising the e-liquid soaked into the cotton to create the clouds you inhale.
How to prime vape tank coils
Before fitting, drip a few drops of e-liquid directly onto all visible cotton wicking holes on the coil until they look fully saturated.
Install the coil into your tank, fill with e-liquid, and then leave it to stand for at least 5 minutes so the wick can soak up more juice.
With the device turned off, take a couple of gentle pulls on the mouthpiece to help draw e-liquid through the coil, then start at a low wattage and gradually increase to your preferred power level.
How to prime pod kit coils
For most pod kits, simply fit the pod (with coil installed), fill it with your chosen e- liquid, and let it sit for around 5 minutes before use.
This waiting time allows the cotton inside the pod coil to fully saturate and helps prevent dry or burnt hits on those first few puffs.
Why coil priming is important
Properly primed coils deliver better flavour and smoother vapour from the very first draw, making your vape more satisfying.
Priming helps extend coil life and reduces the risk of dry hits that can permanently burn the cotton and ruin the coil.
Tips to keep coils performing well
Match your e-liquid to your coil: high VG e-liquids work best in sub-ohm coils and higher-wattage kits, while nic salts and standard freebase liquids suit low-powere MTL pod systems.
Be aware that very sweet or heavily flavoured e-liquids can wear out coils faster, so you may need to replace them more often.
Use the right wattage
Always vape within the recommended wattage range printed on the coil, as running too high can burn the wick and too low can cause weak vapour and flooding.
Finding the “sweet spot” for your coil and e-liquid combination will give you the best balance of flavour, vapour, and coil longevity.
New coils and refills
Every time you fit a new coil, treat priming as essential: saturate the cotton, fill the tank or pod, wait, then start at low power.
Even when just refilling, allow a few minutes for e-liquid to soak back into the coil to maintain clean flavour and avoid scorching the wick.
