Vaping Styles
Guide to Vaping Styles: MTL, DTL and RDL | Bargain Vape Shop
Choosing the right vaping style is one of the most important steps when switching from smoking to vaping. Understanding MTL, DTL and RDL vaping helps you pick the best vape kit, coils, and e-liquids to keep cravings under control and stay off cigarettes.
What are MTL, DTL and RDL?
- MTL (Mouth‑to‑Lung): Closest to smoking a traditional cigarette, ideal for new UK vapers and ex‑smokers.
- DTL (Direct‑to‑Lung): Suits more experienced vapers chasing bigger clouds and warmer vapour.
- RDL (Restricted‑Direct‑Lung): A middle ground between MTL and DTL, with a balance of flavour, cloud and throat hit.
MTL Vaping (Mouth‑to‑Lung)
MTL is the most natural style for smokers who are new to vaping. You draw vapour into your mouth first, then inhale it into your lungs, just like smoking.
How MTL feels and what you need
- Long, smooth, gentle draw into the mouth, then inhale and exhale.
- Less vapour and smell, making it more discreet for everyday use.
- Works best with starter kits, refillable pod kits, and lower‑power devices around 10–20W.
MTL hardware and e‑liquid
- Coils: usually 0.8 Ω and above, smaller airflow and tighter draw.
- Airflow: keep it fairly closed for a cigarette‑like pull.
- E‑liquid: 50/50 or 40PG/60VG blends with higher nicotine (up to 20 mg nic
salts or freebase) to control cravings.
MTL is ideal if you want a stronger throat hit, higher nicotine, and a familiar feel to smoking.
DTL Vaping (Direct‑to‑Lung)
RDL sits between MTL and DTL, offering a slightly tighter lung draw with more vapour than MTL but more flavour and restriction than wide‑open DTL.
How RDL feels and what you need
- Inhale like DTL, but with most of the airflow closed off for a snug, restricted pull.
- Great for vapers moving up from MTL or toning down a very airy DTL setup.
- Works well on versatile pod mods and vape kits with wide power ranges and adjustable airflow.
RDL hardware and e‑liquid
- Coils: typically 0.5–0.8 Ω, balancing vapour and flavour.
- Airflow: partially closed for resistance and warmth.
- E‑liquid: can use both MTL‑style nic salts and lower strength high‑VG juices, depending on the exact coil and kit.
RDL is ideal if you want more vapour and flavour than MTL, but do not want to go all‑in on extreme clouds.
Which vaping style is right for you?
Your vaping style depends on your goals, your previous smoking habit, and how you like your nicotine and vapour to feel.
- Choose MTL if you are a recent ex‑smoker, want higher nicotine and a familiar cigarette‑like draw.
- Choose DTL if you are comfortable with vaping, want big clouds, and prefer lower nicotine strengths.
- Choose RDL if you sit between the two – you want more vapour and flavour than MTL, but still enjoy a bit of restriction.
Styles can change over time, and many UK vapers move from MTL to RDL or DTL as they grow more confident with their kits. Whatever you choose, the best style is the one that helps you stay away from tobacco.
